The holisticgoal is 100% about what you want in your life, based on the deepest values of you and the other decision-makers in your economic whole.  In order for the economic whole to be ‘successful’ for you, the holisticgoal describes the ‘Quality of Life’ you all agree it should deliver for you.  It then goes further, and describes the conditions you will need to create around yourselves, so that you really do experience that life.
 
The holisticgoal works because it is a living, dynamic statement, structured so that all future decisions are tested for to ensure constant movement, decision by decision, towards it.  The process is similar for a business—large or small—as it is for a family or an individual.  After all, decision makers in a business or a family are individual human beings, first.

Soundness infers many things.  For decisions to be sound they need to be considered both short and long term.  No decision is ‘sound’ if the long term consequences of a short term benefit are adverse.  Adverse consequences are likely to appear in one or more of three ways:
  • Financially
  • Ecologically
  • Socially
‘Temporary’ is a good word
Prefacing an holisticgoal with the word ‘temporary’ helps to confirm for you  that it will be subject to revision, as greater clarity of purpose and direction develops over time.  Feel free to revisit and alter your holisticgoal at any time: it is a dynamic, living statement.

Who should form the holisticgoal?
The holisticgoal has to be set by the ‘decision makers’ of the economic whole.   If one individual were to set the holisticgoal for all the others, two things would happen: first, it would be clear there is only one decision-maker in that economic whole, and that everyone else is just a member of their resource base, and; second, those who did not participate will have no ownership of the words.  In either case, you can be sure they excluded people will not use the holisticgoal, and may even white-ant it.

In bigger companies there will be a practical need for ‘wholes within wholes’.  For instance, the ‘Production’ team may have their own economic whole and holisticgoal, where they include both the ‘Marketing’ and the ‘Sales’ divisions within their resource base.  Marketing and Sales would treat ‘Production similarly.
